Together with the municipalities of Middelkerke, Ostend, De Haan and Blankenberge, Coastal Heritage developed an image bank in 2018 to safeguard the cultural heritage of the region for future generations and to share it with a broad public. The image bank contains well known and lesser known heritage collections of the municipalities and of local heritage players who join in.
Challenge
Together with the municipalities of Middelkerke, Ostend, De Haan and Blankenberge, Coastal Heritage was looking for a platform to safeguard the cultural heritage of the region for future generations and to share it with a broad public. Developing a DAMS or image bank project is not a senicure. There are two important aspects:
1. the necessary funds and applying for them if necessary
2. the expertise needed to work out a DAMS.
Solution
MediaHaven DAM offers each of the Coastal Heritage partners a place to store their digital heritage files permanently. The expertise is provided by PACKED and the different partners. This ensures an increase in scale so that a professional approach is possible for all participants.
In addition, a beautiful website offers Coastal Heritage the opportunity to properly disclose their content.The website for Coastal Heritage is a Custom Made website as the client wants specific developments. Via the online image bank the heritage unit Coastal Heritage opens up its digital heritage to the general public. The goal is to collect photos and videos from different municipalities, but still give each municipality the possibility to manage their own media.
The search function with filters allows the visitor to immediately find photos or videos of the coast, the beach, the dyke, but also postcards, posters and much more. The visitor can even find old class photos. One can also work as a true collector on the website. The website goes so far that one can even create an account, log in, and one sees at each photo the possibility to add it to one's own collection.
Result
The image bank currently holds more than 100,000 old photographs, postcards, posters and other heritage objects. With its expertise, Zeticon provides a long-term solution whereby all content is stored in a structured and legal manner.
